Do a 15-minute sweep before the tow truck takes the car. Remove the garage-door remote, spare house keys, toll transponder, parking permits, disability placards, insurance card, registration, glovebox papers, valuables, and personal items. Check under seats, visors, consoles, seat-back pockets, the trunk, and the spare-tire well. Factory-reset the infotainment system so Bluetooth pairings, HomeLink, and saved addresses are erased. Leave the keys and the signed-over title with the car.
Your pre-pickup checklist
Remove security items first
Start with anything that could open a door, gate, or private space. Take the garage-door remote, gate opener, building fob, spare house keys, mailbox keys, and storage-unit keys. Check the visor clip, center console, door pockets, and key ring. If the car has built-in HomeLink or another garage-control feature, you will erase it during the electronics reset step.
Pull billable toll items
Remove the toll transponder from the windshield, dashboard, glovebox, or license-plate mount. Then sign in to your toll account and remove this vehicle from the account. Do both steps. A loose transponder can travel with the car, and an active vehicle listing can still create billing problems after the donation leaves your driveway.
Clear papers and permits
Take out the insurance card, registration, service receipts, parking permits, disability placards, school tags, work passes, and any paperwork with your address or account numbers. Empty the glovebox, owner’s manual sleeve, center console, and door pockets. Keep donation-related papers that you need for your records. Do not leave medical, financial, employment, or family documents in the vehicle.
Sweep cabin and trunk
Work from front to back. Look under both front seats, between the seats and console, in seat-back pockets, cupholders, visors, sunglass holders, child-seat gaps, floor mats, trunk side pockets, cargo nets, and the spare-tire well. Remove cash, sunglasses, tools, chargers, garage receipts, medications, children’s items, and anything you would not want leaving on the tow truck.
Erase stored vehicle data
Factory-reset the infotainment system if the vehicle powers on. Delete Bluetooth pairings, call logs, contacts, navigation history, saved home and work addresses, Wi-Fi settings, garage controls such as HomeLink, and app profiles. If you cannot find the reset menu, check the owner’s manual or remove paired phones from the phone side. Do not disconnect required vehicle components.
Remove optional add-ons
Take aftermarket items you intend to keep, such as dash cams, phone mounts, upgraded stereos, seat covers, roof racks, cargo organizers, and child seats. Keep the car intact and as described when you arranged the donation. If an add-on is wired in or removal could damage the vehicle, leave it in place or tell AutoLift Tampa before free pickup.
Leave pickup essentials
Leave the keys and the signed-over title with the car. Put them where the pickup instructions say, or hand them to the driver if you are present. Include all available keys, key fobs, and alarm remotes that belong to the vehicle. Do not leave your personal key ring attached. Keep copies or photos of donation paperwork for your own file.
Two items with separate guides
Some ownership steps are not part of the personal-item sweep. Title, plate, and notice requirements can vary by state, and if your paperwork, lender status, or DMV record does not match the basic donation checklist, follow the Florida DMV or ask the DMV before pickup. Common questions
Should I leave the title in the glovebox?
Leave the signed-over title with the car, but do not bury it under unrelated papers. Put it with the keys in the pickup location you were instructed to use, or hand it to the driver if you are present. Remove insurance, registration, receipts, and personal paperwork from the glovebox.
What if I forget something in the car?
Do the sweep before the vehicle leaves because recovery may not be practical after transport begins. Check small hiding spots first: under seats, between cushions, visor clips, console trays, trunk pockets, and the spare-tire well. If you realize something is missing right away, contact AutoLift Tampa as soon as possible.
Do I need to remove my toll transponder if it is inactive?
Yes. Remove it anyway, then check the toll account to confirm the vehicle is no longer listed. An inactive or old transponder can still create confusion later. If the tag is stuck to the windshield, remove as much of the device and mounting strip as you safely can.
Should I reset the car if the battery is dead?
If the vehicle will not power on, do not force the electronics reset. Remove physical items and documents, then erase connected data from your phone where possible by deleting the vehicle from Bluetooth, apps, and navigation links. If the car powers up later, the factory reset can be handled then.
