Donate your car in Tampa Bay by December 31 and you may claim a tax deduction for this year. Here’s how it works: when AutoLift Tampa arranges your donation to benefit Heritage for the Blind, your deduction is generally the gross sale price of the vehicle once it sells, not the Kelley Blue Book value. If it sells for more than $500, Heritage for the Blind mails you IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale. If it’s $500 or less, you’ll receive a written acknowledgment, and you may generally deduct up to $500 or the fair market value, whichever is lower. You must itemize deductions on Schedule A to claim any car donation.
We make this fast and local. Year-end tax deduction facts
Deduction equals sale price, not book value
For most donated cars, your tax deduction is the gross sale price Heritage for the Blind receives when the vehicle is sold, not the Kelley Blue Book or advertised value. The actual sale amount is what will appear on IRS Form 1098-C.
When you receive Form 1098-C
If your donated vehicle sells for more than $500, Heritage for the Blind will send you IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale. This shows the sale date and gross proceeds, which you’ll generally use as your maximum charitable deduction.
Vehicles at $500 or below
If the vehicle sells for $500 or less, you won’t receive Form 1098-C. Instead, you’ll get a written acknowledgment. In that case, you may generally deduct up to $500 or the vehicle’s fair market value, whichever is lower, assuming you itemize.
You must itemize on Schedule A
To claim a car donation, you must itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal income tax return. If you take the standard deduction, you cannot also claim a separate charitable deduction for the vehicle. Ask your tax professional which approach benefits you most.
Why December 31 matters
The key date is when you complete your donation, not when the car sells. If you donate and schedule pickup with AutoLift Tampa by December 31, your gift is generally counted for that tax year, even if the actual sale and Form 1098-C arrive in the new year.
